DUE TO OUR UNUSUALLY EARLY SPRING, RECENT RAIN, DETERIORATING TRAIL CONDITIONS, AND WARM TEMPERATURES FORECASTED THROUGHOUT THE COMING WEEK, SNOW ACTION SPORTS, INC. HAS DECIDED TO CANCEL THE FLATHEAD CLASSIC.
I took a drive up to the revised trailhead start this afternoon and found water, thin ice and slush for the first 3 miles of our trail. I have little hope it will last or improve throughout the week. Due to prior logging activity we never had a good base to start with and the recent higher elevation rain has taken its toll.
Be safe out there, enjoy the rest of your season and keep in touch. For those of you who have already paid your entry fee, we can refund you, or put it towards next year. We'll still be here. Snow Action Sports, Inc. will look at earlier race dates next season and start our snow dances early. Thank you all for your patience, understanding and strong heart for the sport.
Sponsors, volunteers, mushers, friends... We'll be in touch. Please share to those of whom might not know.
If you're in the Flathead, remember to come out on Tuesday, March 1st to Bonsai Brewing Project to our fundraiser "For the Love of Sled Dogs."
WE'D LIKE TO EXTEND A BIG THANK YOU TO THE MUSHERS, SPONSORS & VOLUNTEERS WHO CONTRIBUTED IN MAKING THE 2015 FLATHEAD CLASSIC A GREAT SUCCESS.
FLATHEAD CLASSIC SLED DOG RACE
Our main event, The FLATHEAD CLASSIC SLED DOG RACE is a multi-class, multi-sport race, scheduled for March 5th and 6th, 2016. The Flathead Classic is an offspring of Flathead Sled Dog Days, the Flathead Valley’s previous dogsled race.
Events that took place in the 2015 Flathead Classic included 1 and 2 dog Skijoring; 4 and 6 dog sprint and short distance classes as well as a special pure breed class.
On Saturday, February 28th, with special thanks to our local business Tailwaggers, we held a "mutt pull" where local dog owners could try their own talents at mushing by using their own one-dog team with provided gear from Adanac Sleds & Equipment.
Our longest race covered just 12 miles each day and focused on the terrain, our beautiful location, and world-class trail systems. For the end of the season, our competitors were able to show off their athletes in their best form with a full race season coming to a close.
With incredible support from our sponsors, we were able to offer a decent purse for top competitors and wide selection of prizes.
The Olney Volunteer Fire Department jumped on board to offer basic lodging to our mushers as well as food and drinks for spectators the days of the races. This was a great collaboration and an incredible community event. Thanks to all who attended. See you on the trails!
