"My husband and I have had Siberian Huskies since adopting a fun-loving little mixed female back in 1990. Our next Sibe was a purebred and purely silly redhead named Kodiak, who came from a shelter in Wichita, and her personality further convinced us that this was our breed (even after destroying several pieces of furniture and too many other items to mention)! After reading Winterdance, by Gary Paulsen, we adopted our next Sibe, Kanootka, and was told by her foster mom that there are races in our area too, not just in AK. I immediately made plans to attend and before even seeing the dog teams, I HEARD them, and literally something changed in my brain! I HAD TO MUSH DOGS! I started with two dogs and a scooter and built my team of 8 (mostly rescues) over several years with some wonderful mentors to help us on our way. Our dogs are aging (main leaders are 10 and 12) and we have scaled back our goals but I enjoy nothing more than spending time in the woods with my very best furry friends, doing what they LOVE to do...run! I attended the first Flathead Race in 2008 as a photographer and am looking so forward to coming back, this time to run in it with my dogs!"

"I started recreational mushing in 1990 after collecting too many dogs to just run and hike with, and got competetive around 2000 entering the Cascade Quest race. I had my best run one year finishing 2nd. I've bred a few litters of alaskans, one had 11 pups. the most i've had in my kennel was 22 dogs. i'm happy with 12. I've run the Mail Run in Quesnel, BC by far the coldest number of kilometers i have ever run. took a dog team up to alaska in 1999 and handled for Shawn Sidelinger at the Iditarod, the 2nd coldest camping experiences ever at -40 below. I own and operate North Cascades Physical Therapy, founded in 2010 in Omak WA I work all day at work and then pretty much come home and work outside with my animals; 12 dogs, 2 donkeys, and 1 ornery norwegian fjord named archie. "I was born and raised in Alaska where I started mushing when I was a young teenager. I moved to Willow AK in 2003 to work as a handler for Iditarod and Yukon Quest mushers and learn the ins-and-outs of long distance racing. While in Willow I was able to follow my passion for adventures with a dog team, training on the Iditarod trail and competing around the state. Now, my partner Wayne and I, own and race our own kennel that is located in Bend Oregon. We moved to Bend in 2011 so I could finish my natural resource degree with OSU and then started working for the Forest Service as a wildlife technician during the summers while training and racing my sled dog team during the winters.
We keep a small kennel of 12 very competitive Alaskan Huskies that compete in several races throughout the winter season, along with a couple retired race dogs and our next generation. Our race line up for this season includes Darby Dog Derby, Wyoming stage stop, Eagle Cap Extreme, Flathead Classic and Bachelor Butte Dog Derby. I love watching my team’s enthusiasm and endurance on every run, they never cease to amaze me! I owe the success of every race to each one of the dogs, but I put a lot thanks to my wonderful leaders: Foxy, Weasel, Hudson and Dietrich."

"I am a retired Boeing IT manager and live with my husband in the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. I volunteer as a pet bereavement counselor for the Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement and at the Seattle Animal Shelter. I actually started mushing in the 90's when my first Siberian husky would pull me on rollerblades. Deciding I wanted to live a little longer I started scootering with two and then built my team from there. All my current dogs are "recycled" - either rescues or rehomed from other kennels. We regularly come in last place and I have a lovely collection of Red Lanterns that I am very proud of, because they mean we finished. We shattered the record for the slowest time at Eagle Cap Extreme 100-mile this year; I was both amazed by and in awe of my team. It's an honor to share my life with these furry beings."
